Today is World Thalassemia Day, which reminds us about our responsibility towards the society and mankind. Our every drop of blood counts. It can save lives of millions of kids suffering from Thalassemia.
The world is going through an unprecedented stage of Corona Pandemic. India is worst affected. During this hour of crisis, let’s spare a thought for our kids too. They are our future, our next generation. Isn’t it our responsibility to save their lives?
? Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin.
? The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anemia.
? Thalassemia is inherited. It’s caused by either a genetic mutation or a deletion of certain key gene fragments.
? There are two types of Thalassemia – In alpha thalassemia, at least one of the alpha globin genes has a mutation or abnormality. In beta thalassemia, the beta globin genes are affected.
? Thalassemia is most common in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Mediterranean countries such as Greece and Turkey.
? Blood transfusions is one of the key treatments for Thalassemia patients. So, blood donation is key to save them.
